Deputy Foreign Minister Ibrahim Nyei has outlined critical sectors of strategic importance for development cooperation between Liberia and Indonesia.
Speaking Tuesday September 3, during a session at the 2024 Indonesia – Africa Forum II, Minister Nyei, named trade, health, agriculture as well as energy as key areas of development cooperation that the Liberian government seeks to pursue.
Minister Nyei said the Liberian government will work with the Indonesian government and private investors to explore opportunities that would lead to industrialization particularly in the agriculture sector.
He recalled the historic and long-standing bilateral relations between Liberia and Indonesia especially the critical role of the two countries in the formulation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) which was adopted by all United Nations members in 2015.
Minister Neyi used the occasion to solicit the support of Indonesia as Liberia seeks election to the UN Security council.
“We know that Indonesia has a strong voice at the UN, Liberia looks forward to the support of the Indonesian government to buttress advocacy for greater representation of smaller countries on the UN Security council” he stressed.
The Deputy Foreign Minister for International Cooperation and Economic Integration said economic and trade relations between Liberia and Indonesia would be further strengthened as they also collaborate on global political issues.
Meanwhile, the Minister has underscored the lack of diplomatic representation on both sides as a factor that could hinder the effective implementation of development agreement between Liberia and Indonesia.
Minister Nyei shared the platform with Carolyn Turk, World Bank Country Director for Indonesia and Temor-Leste, East Asia and Pacific, Suharso Monoarfa, Minister of National Development Planning of Indonesia and Andre Aguer Arlik, Deputy Secretary General for Infrastructure, Productive and political sectors amongst other top officials and stakeholders.
On the sidelines of the Indonesian-Africa Forum, Minister Nyei also met with Siti Nugrahu Mauludiah, Director General for Information and Public Diplomacy of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Indonesia.
During his meeting with Madam Nugrahu, Minister Nyei advanced the case for Indonesia to promote Liberian made products by exporting them to Indonesia.
For her Part, Madam Nugrahu renewed Indonesia’s commitment to strengthen bilateral ties between Liberia and Indonesia; especially economically, in the area of trade and investment.
