Monrovia, Liberia – August 23, 2025 – Former President George Manneh Weah has broken silence on the demolition of the Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC) headquarters, describing the act as a political attack orchestrated by the Unity Party-led government.
In a strongly worded statement issued Friday, Weah called the incident “unfortunate and regrettable” but urged his supporters and all Liberians to remain calm, law-abiding, and respectful of due process despite what he termed “partisan political mischief.”
“We must take the high road,” Weah said. “In the interest of peaceful coexistence, I urge everyone to remain calm, law-abiding, and respectful of due process.”
The former president accused the administration of President Joseph Boakai of displaying “gross disregard for the rule of law” and abusing state power. He alleged that the police acted under direct instructions from President Boakai when they carried out the demolition, despite an ongoing legal battle over the ownership of the CDC property.
“This was not a lawful eviction; it was a failed mission to destroy and erase the CDC in an attempt to fulfill the very wish Boakai has repeatedly expressed to his lieutenants,” Weah declared.
While condemning the act, Weah sought to reassure his party faithful, describing the demolition as a temporary setback. He announced the formation of a Special National Headquarters Delivery Committee tasked with spearheading the construction of a new, modern CDC headquarters.
“We are builders, not destroyers,” he stressed. “Our unity, strength, and identity are not found in bricks and mortar. They live in the hearts and spirit of our supporters.”
The former president also announced plans for a national tour to engage supporters and rally solidarity in the wake of the demolition.
Despite the fiery tone of his statement, Weah repeatedly cautioned his supporters against violence or retaliation, emphasizing respect for the law and Liberia’s fragile peace.
“Resist the temptation to take the law into your own hands,” he appealed. “However disappointed we are by this outcome, I call on each of you to continue respecting the law and due process.”
Weah closed his remarks with optimism, expressing confidence in the resilience of the CDC and its supporters.
“We are survivors by history,” he said. “Together, we will build a better homeland for our party. So help me God.”
