The Deputy Director General for Lotto Games at the National Lottery Authority (NLA), Richlue O. Burphy, has cautioned children and school going children to stay away from gambling activities.

He called on members of the Shining Light National Quizzing Organization about the importance of patience and timing in both life and competitive endeavors.

Burphy also used the occasion to share insights from his own journey, highlighting how timing can significantly influence success, inspiring the young quizzers and instilling a sense of resilience and strategic thinking as they prepare for upcoming and future competitions.

Speaking at the finals of the just ended quizzing competition as he was being honored for his contributions to youth and children development in Liberia, held at a local church in Paynesville, Burphy warned, “In life, as in quizzing, it’s essential to recognize that every opportunity comes with its own timing. You may have the knowledge and skills, but if you rush into things without preparation, you might miss your chance. And when the actual time for you to get involved in such activity, you might likely not enjoy it anymore. Wait for your time because life is about timing”, he re-emphasized.

According to him, his assertion followed numerical calls from around the country that students of minor ages are now getting involved with the playing of gamble especially using those Chinese machines across the country.

He emphasized, “I encouraged all of you to desist if you are part of those children because it will distract you from your studies, allow you to get into adult behaviors before your time and might even end up going wayward and get involved into deviant behaviors.”

“And you know the unfortunate situation about it; those Chinese would go back to their country and be with their own children enjoying life. So, please know today that life is all about timing and if you don’t wait for your time, you won’t enjoy the game of chance when the rightful time comes,” he encouraged them.

The NLA Deputy DG also urged them to embrace challenges and learn from setbacks, stating, “Every quiz is an opportunity to grow. Don’t be discouraged by losses; instead, use them as stepping stones to improve your skills.”

He concluded by reiterating his belief in the potential of Liberian youth, adding, “You are the future leaders, thinkers, and innovators of our country. Remember, every great achievement takes time and perseverance. Stay committed, and your moment will come.”

Burphy, at the same time, commissioned the quizzers as ambassadors of change against children’s involvement with gambling activities, thus expressing his optimism that they would live up to the creed. He asked them to report every time they see their colleagues on those Chinese machines playing the games.

Meanwhile, the Shining Light National Quizzing Organization, through its leader, Gospellee Livingproof expressed their gratitude for Burphy’s encouragement and support, describing his statement as timely.

He added, “Your advice really resonated with us. We often feel the pressure to perform well, but understanding that timing is crucial helps us focus on our preparation rather than just the outcome.
