CSO Sustainability Index, a tool developed by USAID to assess the strength and overall viability of CSO sectors across more than 70 countries in partnership with the Khana Group has released evaluation reports for 2022 highlighting persistent challenges in CSOs efforts to build crucial relationships and engage with the communities they aimed to serve.
Evaluating civil society organizations globally for two decades now, The 2022 CSOSI report reveals insights into the state of CSOs in Liberia and expectations for 2023. The Index has evaluated the progress and setbacks of the sustainability of CSO sectors using seven keys; legal environment, organizational capacity, financial viability, advocacy, service provision, sectoral infrastructure, and public image.
The Index is intended to be a useful source of information for local and international CSOs, governments, multilateral institutions, donors, academics, and other partners and stakeholders who want to better understand and monitor key aspects of sustainability in the CSO sector in the country. The Index also allows for comparisons both across countries and over time
The index report reveals that the legal environment for CSOs showed a slight improvement in 2022 as free high – quality legal services became available at some government agencies. the report also added that CSOs organizational capacities also improved in 2022 as CSOs engaged directly with many constituencies on a broad set of issues.
In 2022, various organizations generated income through fundraising campaigns on social media, community engagement activities such as clean-ups, and dinners and awards ceremonies.
CSO advocacy saw little change in 2022, CSOs played a major part in engaging with lawmakers to directly influence the legislative and policy processes.
Service provision improved slightly in 2022, as CSOs began to work with the government on projects aimed at enhancing democracy while also building local capacity, and helping meet the needs of the vulnerable.
The sectoral infrastructure of CSOs remained unchanged in 2022. and the pubic image of CSOs remained unchanged in 2022
