Second Lady of Liberia, Synleseh Stephenie Dahn-Koung has officially launched a National Conference on the Status of Women with Disabilities in Liberia.
Speaking at the opening of the conference madam Dahn- Koung underscore the urgent, meaningfully and strategic need for intervention for women with disabilities in Liberia.
She said for so long women with disabilities battled injustices but now is the time to demand concrete action from policymakers in order to better the living standards of the disadvantage group people in the society.
” As we go through this conference, i encourage you to seize the moment and speak out against injustices that have held you back for so long, stand up , let your voices be heard, let policymakers , partners and the nation understand your struggle, recognize your needs and truly listen to your stories”, she urged them.
According to her, the courage of these strong women with disabilities have further inspire her to advocate more for their rights.
The Second Lady Of Liberia very passionate in championing the advocacy campaign to see the lives of women with disabilities improve for the better also assure the gathering of her support to said meaningful endeavor as well as advocating for good policies and facilities that will help create a safer and more accessible environment for them.
“We will hold ourselves accountable and our goal is clear, equality for all, we demand more and action and we are not going to accept to be left behind “, she re-emphasized.
At the same time, Madam Dahn-Koung who used the ocassion to thank partners for their support to advancing equality and inclusion also thanked the press for amplifying the voice of the voiceless that have been unheard for so long.
She stressed that the role of the media in saving lives especially on critical issues is essential to the collective progress they seek.
As they engaged in series of discussions relative to addressing their plight, it is key to address the needs and priority of women with disabilities including their ongoing challenge of gender based violence which they continue to battle, said a representative from the UN Women office who also spoke at the opening ceremony.
She at the same pleged the UN Women’s support and partnership to the second lady to shine the light on addressing the needs and priorities of women with disabilities in a move to advance the empowerment of women in Liberia.
