The office for the Establishment of War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia has commended Liberians home and abroad for a united front that saw Liberia’s overwhelming victory for the United Nations Security Council seat.
According to the Executive Director of OWECC-L, Dr. Jallah Barbu, The level of unity demonstrated during the engagement period is a clear manifestation that Liberians can achieve greater things among the comity of nations as in the Tuesday’s landslide vote at the UN.
The OWECC-L believes such feat would have been difficult to achieve if Liberians had not united in supporting their government, terming such as a clear demonstration of national unity.
Additionally, OWECC-L particularly applaud President Joseph Nyumah Boakai for his displayed leadership as designated to the Minister of Foreign Affairs and her team.
The Office has at the same time thanked UN member countries for the confidence reposed in Liberia to serve at that level.
He further explained that Liberia’s seat at the Security Council is tied to Liberian government’s engagement with the world body seeking its backing through a resolution for the establishment of the War and Economic Crimes Court in Liberia.
OWECC-L sees the vote as a milestone to its mandate as mandated in Executive Order No. 148.
It can be recalled that President Boakai wrote UN secretary General Antonio Guterres seeking the body’s support for Liberia’s desire to establish the court which the president said is intended to bring justice to the victims and healing for the nation by trying those responsible for the most heinous crimes at a tribunal like that of the Special Court for Sierra Leone, allowing for prosecution under international law and international standards.
Meanwhile, Dr. Barbu through the OWECC-L hopes that the UN and the international community can assist the people of Liberia in bringing to justice those responsible for such grave crimes.
