Brooklyn Center, MN – July 26, 2025 – The Liberian community in Minnesota etched a new chapter in the state’s cultural history by hosting its first-ever Liberian Independence Day Parade, a vibrant and spirited celebration that drew crowds from near and far to the city of Brooklyn Center.
In a heartfelt message of gratitude, the organizers extended thanks to the attendees for showing up “full of pride and energy” and making the day “unforgettable.” The historic event, held on July 26, coincided with Liberia’s 178th Independence Day and was officially recognized through a proclamation read by Lieutenant Governor Peggy Flanagan, who represented Governor Tim Walz. The proclamation declared the day as Liberian Heritage Day in Minnesota, cementing its cultural and historical significance for the state’s growing Liberian population.
The City of Brooklyn Center received high praise for its partnership and logistical support. The celebration also saw participation from Council Member Taniesha Kragness, who spoke on behalf of Mayor April Graves, and Mayor Hollies Winston of Brooklyn Park, both of whom expressed strong support for the Liberian community.

Vendors, sponsors, and community partners were also acknowledged for their critical role in making the event safe, family-friendly, and well-organized. Organizers emphasized that the event was not only a celebration of national pride but also a demonstration of unity and community strength.
In response to circulating confusion, organizers clarified that a separate, unrelated event in Brooklyn Park that “ended poorly” had no affiliation with the official Liberian Independence Day Parade in Brooklyn Center. They assured the public that their event remained “peaceful, organized, and filled with joy.”
Closing on an optimistic note, the statement promised that this was only the beginning: “Next year will be even bigger and better.”
