The government of Liberia has taken a significant step towards addressing climate change by establishing a committee in each of its fifteen counties.
Collaborating with the Environment Protection Agency, as well as other ministries, the government is actively engaging in the creation of committees that will oversee climate-related issues in their respective counties.
Cape Mount has been chosen as the location for the committee’s headquarters, which will serve as a vital structure to identify climate-affected areas in the county and develop projects aimed at mitigating such issues.
This newly established climate change committee will consist of a diverse group of stakeholders.
At least 40 individuals from various line ministries, agencies, civil society, and media organizations will contribute their expertise to this important mission.
To further support these efforts, the Canadian government has generously dedicated $20 million solely for the implementation of climate change projects in identified areas.
Liberia and Ghana are guaranteed to benefit from this funding, along with two other countries that will also be chosen for climate projects.
Madam Gbanyea Y. Gbeanquoi, a Ministry of Public Works representative, expressed her optimism for the committee’s work.
She assured that the committee’s capacity will be developed through comprehensive training, and the necessary financial support will be provided.
Additionally, she emphasized that the committee’s mandate extends beyond the county level; it will ensure that climate-related issues are effectively addressed at the national level for implementation.
