Capitol Hill, Monrovia — A cross-section of Liberians Thursday, July 24, 2025 stormed the headquarters of the Liberia National Police {LNP) to demand judicial accountability in an alleged police misconduct and brutality.

The case involves two LNP officers who had gone to effectuate an arrest of a lady identified as Zenab Bah on July 23, 2025 at her New Port Street residence for an alleged power theft.

An alarming social media video portrayed police officers using stringent force on a lady carrying a child and allegedly removing her hijab yesterday-an act utterly condemned by the authority of the LNP and subsequently ordering an immediate investigation into the matter.

Justice campaigners

“This footage is utterly unacceptable and contrary to the values of our institution. The Inspector General of Police, Gregory Coleman, has ordered an immediate and thorough investigation to hold those involved accountable. The presence of a child during the arrest is particularly egregious, highlighting the need for officers to exercise utmost care and restraint. We assure the public that our investigation will be transparent, impartial, and swift”, a news release quotes Col. Coleman.

Following a meeting with the leadership of the campaigners, the Liberia National Police announced that it has commenced investigation into the alleged act of police brutality and will swiftly take the necessary action in line with due process.

Justice campaigners at LNP Headquarters

He told the gathering, the video clearly speaks for itself, while encouraging the public to trust in the wisdom of the newly constituted investigative panel for the dispensation of justice.

“We assure the public that our investigation will be transparent, impartial, and swift. We unequivocally condemn any form of aggression, misconduct, or disrespect by our officers. Such behavior undermines our mission and will not be tolerated. The LNP is dedicated to serving the public with professionalism, respect, and empathy,”Col. Coleman added.

Another segment of the social media video, depicts Madam Bah resisting arrest and allegedly dousing an officer with a hot pot of palm-butter soup, an act that reportedly escalated the situation before her alleged victimization.

But, the campaigners maintained, as trained, and experienced law enforcement officers, the police should have maintain professionalism in the discharge of their duties.

One of the protesters, Mohammed Sy, argued, that the alleged forceful removal of the Hijab from Madam Bah’s head, is a taboo and a violation of the principles of the Muslim tradition.

While condemning the act, Sy challenged the LNP to speedily and impartially investigate the case and proactively make disclosure of the findings.

“The action of the police, is unacceptable, inhumane, is condemned by all Muslims around the World, is condemned by all peaceful people around the world,  and denies the basic rights of humanity, they voiced out.

However, the LNP through its Inspector General, registered his disappointment and apologized on behalf of his men – while renewing his administration’s commitment to upholding the rule of law at all levels.

According to him, the officer in question has been incarcerated, while the team of investigators set the stage for the proceeding.
