GBARNGA-  A team of eleven Spanish doctors has arrived here in Liberia to carry out medical outreach and surgeries in Bong County, in a move designed to address the region’s ongoing healthcare challenges. The doctors, who will work alongside Doctors Without Borders-Liberia, will perform the free surgeries at the CB Dunbar Hospital in Gbarnga and in Palala Town, Kpaii District.

The mission was made possible through the invitation of Bong County Senator Prince Kermue Moye, a long-time advocate for improved healthcare services in the region. The arrival of the Spanish medical team is particularly timely given a recent cut of  US aid to Liberia, a blow that has had far-reaching consequences on healthcare and development programs across the country.

In a statement, Senator Moye expressed his appreciation for the medical team’s arrival and the support of key Liberian officials in facilitating the outreach. “We are deeply grateful for the expertise and generosity of these Spanish doctors,” Moye said. “Their arrival at a time of great need speaks volumes about their commitment to global health. We are equally thankful to Deputy Ministers Bill McGill Junes and Martha C. Morris, as well as all government officials from Bong County who continue to stand with us as we strive to provide the best care possible for the people of Bong County and Liberia.”

The team of Spanish doctors, which includes experienced surgeons and specialists, is expected to treat a large number of patients, many of whom have long been waiting for surgical care.

Dr. Antonio Satorras, the Team Lead of the Spanish Doctors, spoke about the importance of the mission during a short welcoming ceremony organized for them: We are grateful to be here through Senator Moye. We are going to do a big job while we are here because many people are ready to undergo surgery. We hope we can do more than what we have been doing because the more patents we have the more we will work.

The free surgeries will take place at two locations: the CB Dunbar Hospital in Gbarnga, the capital of Bong County, and in Palala Town, Kpaii District, which has seen limited access to medical services due to infrastructure and resource constraints.

A Call for Continued Support

While Liberia has faced challenges in securing consistent external funding for its healthcare system, initiatives like this one demonstrate a growing resilience among government officials and local communities. Senator Moye’s efforts to invite the Spanish medical team reflect his belief in the power of international collaboration and local leadership to create meaningful change.

“We are determined to continue fighting for the health and well-being of our people, no matter the obstacles we face,” Senator Moye said when he appeared on Radio Gbarnga FM 96.5 weeks ago.

In addition to the immediate impact of the medical outreach, the collaboration between local, national, and international stakeholders underscores the critical importance of continued investment in global health, particularly as nations like Liberia face challenges in maintaining progress without the support of major foreign aid programs.

As the Spanish doctors begin their work in Bong County this week, the hope is that their mission will not only bring much-needed relief to patients but also highlight the ongoing need for global cooperation in the face of shifting political and economic realities.

During the welcoming ceremony for the Foreign Doctors in Monrovia on Wednesday, April 2, 2025, some viewers including citizens  from Bong county thanked the Senator and his partners for what they are about to start.

Newton Yowa Greg: Thanks Dr. Cassell Ayun III for your continuous surgical care to our Bong county. Treat your foreign colleagues well as you have always demonstrated. Thanks, family, welcome to Liberia.
