Monrovia, Liberia – Liberia’s Vice President, Jeremiah Kpan Koung says, he has taken note of today’s publication by Front-Page Africa Newspaper under the caption, “LEADING with MALICE”
The publication talks about the absence of VP Koung from the official retirement ceremony of former Chief Justice Sie-A-Nyene G. Yuoh on August 15, 2025.
“The Vice President has consistently demonstrated the highest regard for the Judiciary of Liberia, participating in numerous ceremonies, programs, and official functions of the Honorable Supreme Court throughout the tenure of former Chief Justice Yuoh”, a statement issued by the office of the Vice President on August 21, 2025.
The official response explained that the active presence of the Vice President at such events, has been a clear reflection of his commitment to upholding the rule of law, safeguarding judicial independence, and reinforcing Liberia’s democratic institutions.
It further clarifies that the Vice President’s absence from the retirement ceremony of former Chief Justice Yuoh, was solely due to an official engagement in Accra, Ghana.
“At the request of the President, the Vice President departed Liberia on August 13, 2025, to represent the country at a State Funeral held on August 15, 2025 — the same day of the retirement ceremony. This scheduling conflict was entirely beyond his control. Any suggestion that his absence was an expression of malice or disregard for the Judiciary or former Chief Justice Yuoh is both inaccurate and regrettable”, VP office says.
The communication quotes the office of the VP as saying, “evidenced by his attendance at the inauguration of a Children’s Park established by her daughter, Koung shares a cordial and respectful relationship with former Chief Justice Yuoh.
At the sitting of the Chief Justice and associates on August 20, 2025, Koung extended profound respect and heartfelt appreciation to the former Chief Justice for her decades of distinguished services to the Liberian people while reaffirming his steadfast commitment to supporting the Judiciary as an indispensable pillar of the nation’s democracy.
