Monrovia, Liberia: The newly inducted President of the University of Liberia’s (UL) Interim Student Leadership, J. Bilo Tingban, has pledged a complete overhaul of student governance, promising an administration built on unity, accountability, and unwavering advocacy for student welfare.
Her remarks were made during the induction ceremony for elected officials on June 26, 2025.
President Tingban named three core pillars, including “unity and diversity, accountability and transparent governance, and advocacy for student welfare” as her government’s vision.
She stressed the importance of cohesion within the diverse student body, stating, “we are a student body of varying ideologies, tribes, and backgrounds, yet we share one common purpose: the pursuit of knowledge and progress.”
She urged all students and campus-based organizations to engage in constructive dialogue, highlighting unity as an essential component to their shared values.
Addressing past grievances, President Tingban declared, “No more backroom dealings, no more empty promises.”
She committed to implementing monthly town hall meetings, public financial reports, and an open-door policy, ensuring student voices shape every decision.
Tingban said, her administration will advocate for improvement in library resources, better sanitation, and affordable tuition.
“A student government that does not fight for its people is no government at all,” she asserted, vowing to extend their advocacy beyond campus to prioritize extracurricular activities and foster an environment where every student can reach their full potential.
President Tingban called upon all students, student groups, and the UL administration to collaborate for the success of the state-run university.
She also used the occasion to encourage students to favor peaceful dialogue over protestation to achieve their goals.
In response, the President of the University of Liberia, Dr. Layli Maparyan, affirmed her administration’s readiness and commitment to work collaboratively with the newly inducted Interim Student Leadership.
