A bill seeking to establish a community College in River Gee County, has been introduced at the house of representatives by the man representing the people of district #1, Alexander Pour.
The proposed legislation, titled “An Act to Establish the River Gee County Community College,” was forwarded to the House’s joint committees on Education, Judiciary, Ways, Means, and Finance for scrutiny.
The joint committee is expected to report to the house’s plenary within two weeks.
According to the proponent of the legislative instrument, the bill, if passed, will significantly enhance educational access and drive development in the southeastern region.
“This is about bringing education closer to home. A community college in River Gee would not only provide academic opportunities for our youth but also play a crucial role in boosting the county’s economic and social development”, Representative Pour explained.
According to him, the envisioned institution will offer a variety of degree programs tailored to the needs of the local population, helping to reduce the migration of students in search of higher education.
He believes the college will also serve as a catalyst for human resource development, job creation, and innovation within the county.
“The establishment of this community college has the potential to transform the educational landscape of River Gee, while nothing, it will open new doors for our youth and contribute meaningfully to the region’s overall growth”, he told reporters.
If approved, the college will become a cornerstone in the government’s broader push for educational decentralisation and regional empowerment.
Following all of the legislative and executive ramifications, it is expected that River Gee would join other counties that have benefited from similar institutions aimed at expanding access to tertiary education across Liberia.
