Mixed views have characterized the destruction of the PHP Park Facility with some welcoming the government’s decision while others have so far condemned the action by the current administration.
The heavy political debate between both sides of the divide is said to breeding tension and bad blood in the political corridors of the Country.
But Speaking to reporters, Deputy Information Minister Daniel Sando stated that the construction of the PHP Park Facility enjoyed by hundreds of Liberians daily has been allegedly responsible for frequent internet disruption experienced by internet users across the Country.
According to him, the project damaged the country’s only fiber optic cable situated where a structure of the project is constructed but Cable consortiumof Liberia disagree.
However, others argued that the fluctuation of internet services have been long existing even before the construction of the park while others say, the past government was allegedly warned about the issue prior to the construction but allegedly failed to pay heel to the advise.
Speaking further the Deputy Information Minister disclosed that during the park’s construction, “large quantities of heavy rocks were placed over the cable, causing it to sink and disrupt connectivity.”
Liberia he pointed out relies on the Africa Coast to Europe (ACE) submarine cable for internet access.
According to the Deputy Information boss, “all internet cables from the Atlantic Ocean passes through that corridor, and the construction alledgelly caused serious disruption.”
In move to address the situation, Sando announced that the Liberia Telecommunications Authority (LTA) has intervened, and a cable repair ship is expected in October, adding that the LTA and its team have been farsighted in addressing the problem.
As the ongoing work at the PHP Park continues , there are now claims and counter claims from both sides of the divide with some claiming that the current government is allegedly destroying the facility because, it was constructed during the administration of former President George Weah while others say the ongoing works by the current administration is in the interest of the larger Liberian populace especially in a era of technology.
Meanwhile, according to the Cable Consortium of Liberia the assertion by the government that the project has damaged the only fiber optic cable is untrue and that the decision in the opinion of the CCL is more political.
CCL explained that in collaboration with the LTA and the CCL, they rerouted (redirected) the oversee internet cable on which a monument at the PHP Park is built to a better and convenient space without causing distortion to the internet connectivity.
