The Hub of political activities in Liberia, the National Legislature, continues to be the epic center in the wake of leadership crisis on Capitol Hill.
As the crisis deepens, the political battle line has now been drawn with the visible two parties firmed on their respective positions.
On Tuesday, October 22, 2024, lawmakers on one hand failed to conduct normal activities due to the failure to have a quorum.
Seated in plenary to conduct regular business was Speaker J. Fonati Koffa and Deputy Speaker, Thomas Fallah including minority lawmakers numerially .
On the other hand, majority lawmakers numerically gathered in the joint chambers to conduct legislative activities in an attempt to have Speaker Koffa removed but their attempt failed on grounds that they failed to meet a quorum.
According to our reporter, Lawmakers opting to remove Speaker Koffa were 43 in number.
Under the law, to have a Speaker removed, one should have a total of 49 lawmakers something the so- called majority block failed to obtain but however argued that a sample majority can ensure that they execute their political mandate.
Speaking to reporters, Yekeh Kolubah termed his colleagues’ action as illegal.
According to him, they from Speaker Koffa’s camp are committed and will remain firm in ensuring that Cllr. Koffa is not removed as Speaker.
Even though it will be an interference but Representative Kolubah wants President Joseph Nyuma Boakai’s intervention into the crisis.
” If these guys can’t meet quorum and we too can’t meet quorum, the Executive will be strangulated and the work of the people will not go ahead and that will be bad as such , the President needs to take action now”, Yekeh added.
According to him, this is the change they voted for as such, the change must set the example and precedence respectively.
The Montserrado County District Ten lawmaker also warned Speaker Koffa not to bow down to any pressure in an attempt to resign, emphasizing that if he did, his life will be at risk.
He stated that he is also seeking legal advise from his lawyers in a drive to make further decisions in line with the laws on the issue.
“I am still having consultation with my lawyer and if need be, I will reach out to the Supreme Court to have the entire government desolved if we can’t meet quorum and work for the Liberian people “, if it cause us to have reelection, that will be fine but Speaker Koffa will not be removed “, he maintained.
As the crisis heightens , the fate of the people is now in limbo due to the failure of their lawmakers to do the official work for which, they were elected.
What is still unclear is whether the two parties will continue on such par if they fail to reach a quorum to discuss normal activities for the general benefit of the Country.
