In the wake of the resignation of former Minister of Commerce Amin Modad, Margibi County Senator Nathaniel McGill said the resignation of Mr. Modad is a first step but not Sufficient.
“This is not about Amin’s resignation, it is about upholding transparency and accountability and the rule of law.
Senator McGill emphasized that if those principles are not enforced, such violation will continue to erode Public trust.
According to him, the investigation regarding such matter must continue because there was a clear violation of the Liberia Revenue Authority instructing Medtech to purchase the controversial vehicle what has been the central point leading to the resignation of Mr. Modad.
Senator McGill said the Liberian Senate pointed out gross violation of the agreement and recommended to the General Auditing Commission to conduct a full skill audit in order to determine how much medtech spent on behalf of the Government.
He stated further in the recommendations that medtech will be held accountable for repayment.
In his resignation letter to President Joseph Nyuma Boakai, Mr. Modad said he provided all necessary documents to demonstrate that there was no malfeasance, however, he was deeply concerned about the impact on his integrity and the administration which he indicated continues to be a distraction of the real national issue and agenda as such saw it prudent to tender in his resignation.
Modad further appreciated the Liberian leader for the nine months in which in his words he served with integrity and passion.
The resignation of the Commerce Minister has so far been greeted with mix views in the public with some welcoming it while others are calling for full skill investigation into the entire matter or transaction for the sake of transparency and accountability in the public space.
Ahead of speculations of major reshuffle in government by President Boakai many believe that there will be more in house forceful resignations in order to save face than the popular expectations from the public.
