The Plenary of the Liberian Senate has mandated its committee on  Agriculture to investigate and recommend a permanent solution to Plenary,  the act of invasion of Farms, Gardens, and Communities by  Wildlife in Golakonneh District, Grand Cape Mount County.

Plenary’s action was triggered by a complaint filed by Grand Cape Mount County Senator, Dabah Mabande Varpilah, praying the indulgence of Plenary to launch an investigation into the cause of invasion by wild animals, which has led to the significant destruction of gardens and farms, thereby posing severe threat to the livelihoods of local dwellers, whose income and food supply depend largely on subsistence farming and gardening in the County.

According to the Senator, the invasion by these wildlife, notably Elephants, in Grand Cape Mount County over the years has left many families experiencing food insecurity, living in fear of elephant attacks while farming. 

During her two Minutes Articulation in Session, the People’s Senator added that over the years, there has been a repeated and increased number of elephants invading towns, villages, hamlets, as well as farms and gardens such as Hehyeah, Vargway, Benduma-Mafarlah, Marbons, Kpelleh Village, Small Weaju amongst other communities that have been victimized.

Meanwhile, Sen. Varpilah, addressing Plenary on her communication, stressed that there is a need for immediate intervention by the Senate adding that the situation if not brought under control would cause danger and acute food shortages and increased poverty, restrict people’s movement, something she thinks is a potential threat to food security and Humans health, noting that Citizens of Grand Cape Mount County are being exposed to various decease outbreaks resulting from Malnutrition.
