MONROVIA – Former Minister of Finance and Development Planning, Samuel D. Tweah, has praised the Government and people of Liberia following the Millennium Challenge Corporation’s (MCC) reaffirmation of a second compact for the country, describing it as a “big victory” rooted in collaborative national leadership.
In a statement on Thursday, Tweah said the achievement is not only a milestone for the current administration but a symbolic reminder of the progress Liberia can make when leaders put the national interest above politics.
According to him, former President George M. Weah laid the “foundation” for the new compact by strengthening governance systems — a key requirement for MCC eligibility.
“President WEAH cemented the gains of governance, without which an MCC compact is NEVER possible,” Tweah said, noting that the former President advanced the governance progress he inherited from ex-President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf, under whose leadership Liberia secured its first MCC compact. “This Compact award memorializes his legacy in governance,” he added.
Tweah also credited President Joseph Nyuma Boakai for demonstrating what he called “strong leadership” in pushing Liberia across the finish line after meeting the MCC scorecard requirements. He emphasized that while passing the scorecard is essential, diplomatic engagement is equally critical to securing the compact.
“The President made Liberia’s case to the MCC board and achieved a Compact for the country,” Tweah noted. “You leveraged and navigated your predecessor’s foundation with dexterity, skill and diplomatic finesse.”
The former finance minister congratulated both past and present leaders for their roles and extended commendations to the Liberian people, expressing hope that the achievement will inspire a stronger sense of national unity.
“May this victory egg us all toward a common national purpose irrespective of political suasion,” he said.
Liberia’s second MCC compact, once finalized, is expected to fund major development initiatives aimed at boosting economic growth and strengthening governance.
